Beans: The key to better nutrition for children in Bangladesh
A total of 6,156kg of beans were distributed by our BCSS colleagues to 8 boarding schools in Bangladesh. In a country plagued by poverty and malnutrition, beans are an inexpensive and affordable food with extraordinary potential to improve child nutrition. Rich in protein, fibre and micronutrients, beans offer a comprehensive nutritional solution.
Why beans?

High in protein: Beans are an excellent source of vegetable protein, which is essential for children's development and growth. Protein supports tissue formation and regeneration, strengthens the immune system and ensures overall healthy development.

Availability and price: Beans are one of the cheapest and most accessible sources of protein in Bangladesh. They are easy to grow on small plots and are resilient to adverse conditions, ensuring food security for even the poorest families.

Important micronutrients: In addition to protein, beans contain important micronutrients such as iron, zinc, folic acid and B vitamins, which are essential for preventing anaemia, boosting immunity and healthy brain development.
- Fibre: Beans are rich in fibre, which aids digestion, lowers cholesterol and provides satiety, helping to combat malnutrition and obesity.
What's more, beans are a favourite snack for many children and students. They can be prepared in a variety of ways and are a welcome change of diet. Kids just love them.
