Floods have struck again: Bangladesh calls for help

Bangladesh is in crisis. Since the July demonstrations that led to the fall of the government, the country has been hit by devastating floods. In August, floods hit the eastern and south-eastern parts of the country, and in October the waters moved northwards. These natural disasters have affected the lives of millions of people, including the children we support in their studies.

Double Disaster

In August, swollen rivers in the east and southeast of the country caused widespread flooding, destroying homes, crops and infrastructure. In total, 18 million people were affected and more than 500,000 had to be evacuated. We were able to raise $9,300 for emergency relief (drinking water, food, hygiene items) and we are very grateful to the donors for their support.

The situation is now repeating itself in the north of the country. 

Schools and Children at Risk

Children are the most vulnerable. Six of our schools and around 200 families supported by our programme have been affected by the floods. People have lost their homes, their crops and some have even lost their fields. The children are safe, but their education has been disrupted. It will be some time before they can return to school.

Humanitarian Aid Urgently Needed

Our colleagues from partner organisation BCSS are working on the ground to provide humanitarian aid. The most needed items are food, drinking water and basic hygiene items. We expect to reach around 1,200 people in the area around the schools.
