Give Education. Give Future.
Some 3.7 million children in Bangladesh are out of school, compared to some 250 million children worldwide. These alarming figures highlight the urgent need to help these vulnerable children. In developing countries like Bangladesh, the basic right of access to quality education is often limited, leaving millions of children unable to reach their full potential.
A number of factors contribute to this problem, including poverty, child labour, early marriage, geographical barriers, natural disasters and political instability.
Poverty, child labour, early marriage
Poverty forces many families to rely on their children's income, preventing them from attending school. Child labour is widespread in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and textiles, further limiting educational opportunities.
Early marriage, especially for girls, often leads to early pregnancy and the end of schooling. Nearly 51% of girls in Bangladesh are married before the age of 18, significantly limiting their educational opportunities.
In rural areas, long distances to schools and lack of transport can also hinder access to education. Gender inequality is also an issue.
Natural Disasters and Political Instability
Bangladesh is frequently affected by natural disasters such as cyclones, floods, extreme heat and drought. Political instability, conflict and civil unrest also affect education.
In late August, floods affected 18 million people in the east and south-east of the country and forced the evacuation of more than 500,000 people.
These disasters cause extensive damage to property, schools and infrastructure. People often lose their land and livelihoods. Children miss school or may have to drop out altogether.
Negative consequences
Limited education has far-reaching consequences for individuals and society as a whole. Without basic literacy and numeracy skills, young people are trapped in poverty. They struggle to secure skilled employment, limiting their ability to provide a decent life for themselves and their families.
At the societal level, limited education hinders economic growth and reduces the potential for innovation. The entire community loses out on development opportunities.
Give Education. Give Future.
Significant investment is needed to address this crisis and expand access to quality education. This includes building schools, training qualified teachers, and providing scholarships and financial support to underprivileged children.
For 25 years, the BanglaKids programme has been helping children from poor families by providing education, food and medical care.
Let's work together to ensure that every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity for a quality education and a brighter future.
